Angel's Secrets Cafe
So nice, we went there twice. The Thai restaurant (estd 1997) has a proud sign that says, “Eat there, and never die”, a large menu, and well-made Khai Soi. The peculiar Northern Thailand-specific dish can take getting used to so Kanjana’s version is nice way to ease into it. Also recommended: fried noodle kee-mao (hot!) and stir-fried morning glory.

Lucky Too
A short walk from the old moat, the cheap prices and quick service (and soy noodles) make this a winning stop when you’re tired of ‘touristing’ and starving.

TongTemToh
Kai Yang Nong Krob (Thai grilled chicken) is best savoured in the jungle-setting of Cherng Doi Grilled Chicken (they also have reasonably-priced chicken and pork steaks).

Kalare Night Bazaar
Grilled chicken connoisseurs, this joint is often at loggerheads with Cherng Doi when it comes to the greatness of the chicken. Located near Wat Phra Singh, their moist chicken and tangy sauces are the stuff of legend. Head to both, and everyone wins!

Ploen Ruedee Night Market
Perfect for a traditional Northern Thai meal, the reason for their long queues is their authentic rendition of Thai dishes (OG classics like nám prík ong— chilli paste with vegetables for dipping) and experimental ones using ant eggs! Set in an old teak house, it’s quaint locale is an added bonus.

Huay Tung Tao Lake, Chiang Mai
From Little Istanbul to Naina Indian Food, the bazaar’s range of cuisines is remarkable, but our favourite were the many authentic local Thai stalls which fight for your attention and our well-priced. (Make sure to try the chicken and pork satays on a stick, which make a great snack)
