Chamber Music Charleston is pleased to return to the Piccolo Spoleto Festival for two distinctive programs of music.  The first celebrates music by women composers of the Baroque Era and the second highlights the American sounds that have been weaved into music for string quartet by Antonin Dvorak, Florence Price, HT Burleigh, and William Grant Still. Each program takes place in the historic ballroom of South Carolina Society Hall and begins with a light reception in the antechamber.  Each concert is approximately 55 minutes in length and tickets are $5 for students, $25 for general admission, available online at chambermusiccharleston.org and citypapertickets.com.  The first program is titled Forgotten Voices: Celebrating Women Composers of the Baroque and Early Classical Era. The world has celebrated the music of composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach and Antonio Vivaldi for centuries, but what about the female composers who were writing equally glorious music during the Baroque and early Classical era?  In 1756 Anna Bon, “virtuosa di musica di camera,” penned extraordinary flute sonatas for her employer, the illustrious Margrave of Brandenburg and his music-loving wife.  And then there is Anna Amalia, Duchess of Saxe-Weimar and composer who played harpsichord, flute, and violin.  Chamber Music Charleston curates a special program of music that explores the compositions of these lesser-known composers, performed alongside their male contemporaries.  Performing musicians include flutist Regina Helcher Yost, oboist Kelly Moziek, bassoonist Sandra Nikolajevs, and harpsichordist Julia Harlow. The second program is titled Capturing the American Spirit – music of Dvorak, Price, Burleigh, and Still.  The story begins with a young singer named Harry Thacker Burleigh, who was working as a custodian at the National Conservatory in New York City during the 1890s to fulfill the requirements of his scholarship. One evening, Antonín Dvořák, the newly appointed director, overheard Burleigh’s deep baritone voice singing the spirituals that his grandfather had taught him. This chance encounter marked the beginning of a remarkable friendship and Dvořák’s introduction to the world of African-American spirituals.  Chamber Music Charleston’s program brings together the music of Burleigh and Dvorak, alongside those of other important but long-neglected composers such as Florence Price and William Grant Still. Through their music, the program paints a vivid portrait of a distinctive, yet classically-informed, American sound that is rooted in the country’s diverse cultural heritage.  Performing musicians include violinists Frances Hsieh and Jenny Weiss, violist Ben Weiss, and cellist Tim O’Malley. Lowcountry Artists Gallery

Lowcountry Artists Gallery presents a new exhibition of photographs by Nicole Robinson for the month of June in a show entitled “Wave Therapy.” An opening reception will be held at Lowcountry Artists Gallery, 148 East Bay Street, on Friday, June 2, 2023 from 5-8 PM. Admission is free and all are welcome. Light refreshments will be served and the artist will be in attendance. The exhibit showcases Nicole's latest collection of photographs that bring relaxation and happiness by the shore and beyond. Laughway to the Weekend - Come laugh it up with us half way to the weekend! This improv comedy show will feature 3 acts of hilarious improv comedy. Wednesday nights are a Charleston tradition that feature long form improv comedy.  Every show is different and completely based on audience suggestions. Show is appropriate for 15 years and older. It is not “family friendly.”  Runtime is 90 – 105 minutes.

Campers get down and dirty  exploring a marsh ecosystem and tracking animals along the trail while learning about  archaeology, life in a marsh, Native Americans, and animals. Nature Trailer Summer Camps are  for ages 5 – 10 and include crafts, activities, and admission to the Dill Sanctuary from 9 am  through 12 pm.  Reservations required. They will be  on hand to share projects currently being worked on and to help identify your fossil finds.  FREE for Members and FREE with admission to The Charleston Museum.  Sweetgrass Basket Weaving Workshop with Local Artisan Sarah Edwards-Hammond June 10th, 9:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  Join local artisan Sarah Edwards-Hammond for in-depth instruction on sweetgrass  basketry which has been an integral part of the Lowcountry’s Gullah Geechee  community since the 17th century. Edwards-Hammond comes from a long line of basket  makers and has passed down the tradition to her family and others in the community.  She will share a brief history of the artisanal craft of basket making. Participants will  then spend the remainder of the class making their own basket guided by Edwards Hammond. Come learn about an extraordinary craft that has been a staple of culture,  art, and history in Charleston for centuries. All materials and instruction will be provided.  Space is limited. America’s First Museum: 250 Years of Collecting, Preserving and Educating, Part 2 opens to the public   June 17th, 2023: 9:00 am – 5:00 pm   Commemorating two and a half centuries since its founding and spanning nearly 4.6 billion  years of history, we are pleased to present America’s First Museum: 250 Years of Collecting,  Preserving, and Educating in the Historic Textiles Gallery. This year-long exhibit will feature a  wide array of objects that tell the story of this impressive institution and its remarkable  collections.  Part two will showcase a church pew made by enslaved hands measuring 20 feet in length,  centuries old Archaic carved bone pins, a skull from the largest known flying bird and a couture  Fortuny gown.
