Nan Madol
WOWOWOW! Have you ever heard about Nan Madol? Its my favorite place in the Pacific so far (and top 10 site in the world). Nan Madol is an ancient city built some 2,000+ years ago out of volcanic rock and sea coral on the Eastern shore of #Pohnpei island in #Micronesia 🇫🇲 It’s something like Angkor Wat but on the middle of a remote island... Apparently it was a place for royalty gatherings as well as the burial site for the king and queen. I honestly hadn’t heard about it until a week ago when @dhersz mentioned it to me in Nauru, and I am completely blown away by what I saw here. The ruins are remarkably in tact, and historians/scientists still haven’t figured out HOW people were able to carry these rocks (weighing up to 5 tons each) across the island. Especially considering the island had a population of a few thousand people back then. Nan Madol is especially cool because we were the ONLY ones around and we had several hours to explore these fascinating structures. Highly recommend adding this place to your list! #nanmadol #micronesian #FSM #7wonders #Unesco #pacificislands #pacific
