Join us for a community discussion held on the Common Ground with Commonhouse Aleworks as part of our event series Brewing on Books: A Community Book Club. This series focuses on local topics of interest for community members. For Park Circle's annual Gay Pride Festival, we're hosting author Harlan Greene for a discussion of Charleston's little-known LGBTQ history from the author's new book, The Real Rainbow Row. Much has been written of the city’s history of civil rights, and its rich African American, women’s, ethnic, and religious past. One of the minority groups long left out of the club has been Charleston’s lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and other sexual minorities community. It’s not that they haven’t been here all along, making history, contributing greatly to the creation of one of America’s most distinctive cities. But, even now, with so many people out and acknowledged, marching in the streets, being elected to public office, and marrying, there are still discrepancies. There are no statues to LGBTQ people (while some discriminatory statutes linger), and very few official mentions anywhere. While other pasts blaze brightly, there is just a flickering of knowledge about local LGBTQ history. About the Author Harlan Greene is author of the novels Why We Never Danced the Charleston, What the Dead Remember and The German Officer's Boy. His non-fiction works include Charleston: City of Memory (with photographs by N. Jane Iseley), Mr. Skylark: John Bennett and the Charleston Renaissance and Slave Badges and the Slave-Hire System in Charleston, South Carolina, 1783-1865 (with Harry S. Hutchins Jr. and Brian E. Hutchins). With James Hutchisson, he co-edited Renaissance in Charleston: Art and Life in the Carolina Lowcountry, 1900-1940. The Real Rainbow Row is his latest release.

First Friday for June features live music from Brushfire Stankgrass and BBQ from Big Boned BBQ! BBQ fires up around 5 with tunes kicking off at 6! Brushfire Stankgrass is an Asheville-based bluegrass fusion group featuring brothers Ben & Will Saylor (banjo/guitar/vocals), Micah Thomas (drums) and Daniel Iannucci (bass.) The band, now in their tenth year with its current lineup, has released four studio albums to date, and has two more albums currently underway, tracked at Asheville’s famed Echo Mountain Studios. Exciting live shows and cutting edge studio material is at the forefront of their musical product. “The Rich Cache” was released in 2021 and is just that, a collection of buried tunes that the band has performed on stages great and small for over a decade, and finally, lovingly, self produced into a full length album. Featuring fan favorites like “Appalachian Snow “ and “The Party Suite” the album evokes a true sense of the group’s history and evolution, and is a celebration of some of their most unique and lasting creations. From traditional acoustic mastery to deep space synth vibes, their entire range is on full display. Tracked at Echo Mountain Studios in 2018, “City of a Thousand Hills” is the culmination of countless hours of practice and collaboration, consternation and celebration. It is a rueful love letter to their mountain home, as well as a fervent call to action, continuing the band’s urgent message of preservation and conservancy in “Pretty Ass Blue Ridge Mountain Shit” that began with 2013’s Microclimates. With contributions from much loved local talents and the engineering mastery of the good folks at Echo Mountain, the album represents the groups greatest achievement to date, both creatively and technologically.

Charleston Battery Home Game (Summer Nights $3 Beer) – Wednesday, June 7th vs. Detroit City FC 7:30 PM Come enjoy warm weather in the Lowcountry with $3 beers all night long - The Charleston Battery announced Monday the dates and opponents of the club’s 2023 USL Championship schedule. Charleston will play a 34-match schedule across 32 weeks from March through October. Single-game tickets and Season Memberships are available now and can be purchased through tickets.charlestonbattery.com. “The 2023 campaign will be the toughest, most talented and most competitive season in USL history,” said Battery Head Coach Ben Pirmann. “That’s what our sport is all about: competing. We’re so excited and honored to be able to don the Black and Yellow this upcoming season. “We’re focused on improving every single day. We want to look in the mirror, make improvements, and then give our all every week for this club and community. Playing in Charleston at Patriots Point is a special honor, or passion and determination will be on full display for our supporters to enjoy.” The Battery are slated to play every team in the league; home-and-away series against every team in the Eastern Conference and six home and six away matches against teams in the Western Conference. The top eight clubs of each conference will advance to the USL Championship Playoffs. Breaking down the home matches by day of the week, the Battery play one on Wednesday, three on Friday and 13 on Saturday. Charleston will face four clubs for the first time, including Phoenix (H), Monterey Bay FC (H), Oakland Roots SC (H) and El Paso Locomotive FC (A). Five of the Battery’s first eight games are home matches. The Black and Yellow will host Phoenix, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Hartford Athletic, Louisville City FC and Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC through April. Defending league champions San Antonio FC will visit Charleston for the first time on May 13 after the inaugural meeting in 2022. Western Conference sides Monterey and Oakland trek east to play the Battery on May 20 and August 4, respectively. Fellow BBQ city club Memphis 901 FC host the Battery on June 24 and then arrive in Charleston on August 26. Five of the Battery’s final eight games will also be played at home, with Memphis, San Diego Loyal SC, FC Tulsa, Miami FC and Birmingham Legion FC coming to Patriots Point. The home clash against Legion FC on October 14 is the regular season finale. The USL Championship Playoffs will remain a single-elimination format, culminating in the 2023 USL Championship Final on a to-be-determined date taking place in mid-November. “The Battery are one of the most historic teams in North America, we want to honor this club with our performances and effort, and return Charleston to prominence in the playoffs,” said Coach Pirmann. Fans can stay tuned for announcements on theme nights for the 2023 season which will be unveiled in the coming weeks.
