KI/KI / DJ Tool / Como Se DJ / Roi Perez - Spielraum resident KI/KI makes her debut. Fusing pulsating trance grooves that linger on the border between psy/prog and other tunneling substrains, KI/KI’s knack for controlled chaos is plain to see. The Dutch artist has been at it for a minute, pushing a concoction that’s equal parts euphoric and dark, with a flinty, highly-defined detail and absolutely throbbing low end. Mala Junta’s DJ Tool rides in similar lanes, upping the BPM and seizing the energy. He brings a subversive flair to the mix, tweaking more brazen flavors with a frenetic twist. NY’s Como Se DJ completes the lineup. Following up on a string of standout sets at STUDIO and an absolute throwdown at RUSH, the Recess resident balances the night with a dose of cheek and a dash of seismic impact.

Héctor Oaks’ résumé is one of the most impressive in techno today: a resident at the revered Bassiani as well as Berlin’s best party, Herrensauna, label boss for the impeccable OAKS and KAOS labels and a master of the all-vinyl set. He’s a rare DJ who can keep up with the old-school masters while sounding utterly current. His sets bristle and explode with the tight focus of purist techno, while also mixing moments of snickering flash that call back to ‘90s rave. An unstoppably charismatic force in the booth, his set at last year’s Wire Festival was a standout. Kyruh was another Wire highlight and has been a significant presence at BASEMENT over the last year and change. A true rising star on the decks, she lets it rip without hesitation, delivering a high velocity techno firestorm that refuses to relent. And the world has taken notice: Kyruh has been steadily working her way across North America and will be returning to Europe in the spring. Jek returns to the club for the third time in as many months. His sets bloom and glow with a warm energy, diving into flowy techno, breaks and basslines with a cool, decisive touch.

Kangding Ray headlines Altær. The German artist is one of those special ones: an incredible producer whose range extends from wild, freewheeling club tracks to carefully considered compositions. He’s equally known for his live and DJ sets, each of which showcase a level of craft that places him in rare company. His affiliations with exemplary labels like Raster-Noton and Stroboscopic Artefacts speaks to the quality of his work, with a strong experimental current infusing his singular approach to techno. A self-described “free maverick,” his work remains in constant evolution and flux. Mary Yuzovskaya returns to BASEMENT and to NY. The former resident was a regular in the city’s scene, bringing an elevated, vinyl-only purism and a highly-developed technique to the mix. Now based in Berlin, she’s been keeping it rolling with her Mondays Off label and contributions to essential labels like Semantica. One of the true masters of the hypnotic style, Yuzovskaya’s set to bring her rich dimensionality to Altær. Auspex pushes techno to its heaviest and ritualistic extremes. The Altær founder and resident epitomizes his party’s ethos, where the power and intensity of the music forge new neural pathways, overwhelming the senses in search of spiritual transfiguration.

This is a lineup almost three years in the making. On March 13th, 2020, Bloody Mary was scheduled to play Balance at BASEMENT. Life of course had other plans, but she’s finally able to make her long-awaited debut at the club alongside much of the original lineup. Whether in her bruising DJ sets or her classically-minded hardware productions, Bloody Mary’s work speaks to an unflinching vision of gripping funked-up acid techno. The Dame Music is a paragon of sturdy, bracing four-on-the-flour sounds, embracing an electric, synth-heavy palette that moves with a powerful directness. White Material co-founder Young Male is one of NY’s most steadfast producers and DJs. A devotee of first-rate, slamming techno, his releases boom with crisp impunity and shiver with simmering, shadowy mystery. He’s maintained an unbroken level of activity for over a decade and always delivers the goods, both in his famed 909-centered live performances and exceptional DJ sets. Justin Cudmore never misses. The Balance organizer is known for his saucy, driving sound, rooted in rock-solid US techno. Whether solo or in collaboration with The Carry Nation as the The Majorettes, Cudmore’s productions always bring a subtle edge to unfussed, perfectly positioned elements. Fatherhood is the duo of Michael Magnan and Physical Therapy. In STUDIO, they have permission to go all out, picking from the trippiest, grungiest and sleaziest corners of their catalog. Both are NY essentials on their own. Together, their chemistry and sense of push-and-pull is an indelible treat. NY artist Sybil Jason specializes in tougher house flashbacks. On her FARCED shows, she cataloged years of exploratory radio excursions that answer to no one. Known for her wide-ranging taste that spans techno, house, electro and more, Jason’s sets are renowned for expertly sliding from one sound to the next without a pause for breath. Often drawing from her experience growing up in Haiti, she blends Haitian edits into her eclectic selections. Jason’s a fitting complement, then, to Fatherhood’s lysergic take on NY dance and Balance’s heady curation.
