The Wiz is a musical performance described by critics as a "thrilling" and "hauntingly beautiful" take on "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz." Refreshingly diverse and emotionally-driven, the show debuted on Broadway in 1975 and was produced by Motown Records. It scored a total of seven Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was the first all-black musical to appear on Broadway. The Wiz has made a lasting impression on musical theater, leading to multiple revivals since its debut and even a 1978 film adaptation starring Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, and Richard Pryor.
