A few months ago, Buxton Books began sourcing embroidered, handmade, linen bookmarks from a company called Hibiscus Linens. To nobody's surprise, they quickly became favorites at Buxton Books among booksellers and customers alike.  Now, we are excited to announce that we will be hosting a Bookmark Embroidery Class in the bookstore with the founder and artisan behind Hibiscus Linens, Mariana Barran! During this class, Mariana herself will guide you through simple embroidery stitches and design so that you can create your very own linen bookmark. At the end of the 45-minutes, each attendee will have a made-with-love bookmark to take home with them, as well as a knowledge of how to continue their embroidery practice at home. Throw away those old receipts and business cards being used to hold your page and make your days reading at the park, beach, or coffee shop even more stylish. Plus have fun learning (or honing your skills) with an embroidery expert!  This class is suitable for all levels! No prior embroidery experience required.  About Hibiscus Linens:  Named 2018 Best Southern Tastemaker by Southern Living and Winner of the 8th Annual Made in the South Awards, Needlework Designer Mariana Barran work combines a modern aesthetic with traditional textile and needlework techniques. The artist, a Mexican designer, is passionate about preserving old world stitching methods. This allows her to work through heritage textiles to reveal new insights in a very simple matter. She believes in the warmth and universal language that comes from a piece of art made completely by hand. Hibiscus Linens offers a unique combination of pre-made and made-to-order linens and also classes & experiences to learn and immerse yourself in the traditional needlework techniques.

Buxton Books is proud to team up with Marjory Wentworth, Former Poet Laureate of South Carolina, to hold a very special Read Across South Carolina event! This is a free, in-store event. No RSVPs required. We have always loved celebrating banned books here at Buxton Books. After all, what would our shelves be without titles like Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home, Toni Morrison’s Beloved, George M. Johnson’s All Boys Aren’t Blue, Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell’s And Tango Makes Three, and so many more? That’s a rhetorical question because the answer is quite obvious - they’d be pretty pitiful! But if you’ve been paying attention to the news recently, you know that the effort to combat book-banning is taking on renewed importance with campaigns to remove large swaths of books from shelves gaining steam. Here in South Carolina, book challenges are on the rise, and most of the books receiving challenges are those of marginalized groups. So on April 19, Buxton Books and Marjory Wentworth have extended an invite to members from all over the Charleston community to come read from their favorite banned books and discuss what book-banning means to them. We hope to celebrate these books and educate the community about what they can do to ensure that our curiosity, intellectual freedom, and reading life is as rich and powerful as possible! Joining us are community members including (but not limited to): Mary Alice Monroe (author) Rev. Jeremy Rutledge (pastor at Circular Congregational Church) Brian Hicks (journalist) Asia Mae (poet) Damon Fordham (author, educator, Charleston tour guide) Larissa Bortz (high school English teacher) Paul Bowers (journalist and activist) This event will be held in conjunction with many other Read Across South Carolina events happening at bookstores and libraries across the state in late April, including the event that inspired it all, Read-In 2023 at the South Carolina State House. Use #ReadAcrossSC to connect on social media!

ABOUT A SHADOW IN MOSCOW A betrayal at the highest level risks the lives of two courageous female spies: MI6’s best Soviet spy and the CIA’s newest Moscow recruit. As the KGB closes in, a compromise must be struck if either woman hopes to survive. Vienna, 1954. After losing everyone she loves in the final days of World War II, Ingrid Bauer agrees to a hasty marriage with a gentle Soviet embassy worker, following him home to Moscow. But nothing deep within the Soviet Union’s totalitarian regime is what it seems, including her new husband, whom Ingrid suspects works for the KGB. Upon her daughter’s birth, Ingrid risks everything and reaches out in hope to the one country she understands and trusts — Britain, the country of her mother’s birth — and starts passing along intelligence to MI6, navigating a world of secrets and lies, and light and shadow. Washington DC. 1980. Part of the Foreign Studies Initiative, Anya Kadinova finishes her degree at Georgetown University and boards her flight home to Moscow, leaving behind the man she loves and a country she’s grown to respect. Though raised by dedicated and loyal Soviet parents, Anya soon questions an increasingly oppressive and paranoid Soviet regime at the height of the Cold War. When the KGB murders her best friend, Anya picks sides and contacts the CIA. Working in a military research lab, Anya passes along Soviet military plans and schematics in an effort to end the 1980s arms race. Alternating between points of view, the past catches up to the present when an unprecedented act of treachery in 1985 threatens all undercover agents operating within the Soviet Union and both women find themselves in a race against time and the KGB.  ABOUT KATHERINE REAY:  Katherine Reay is a national bestselling and award-winning author of several novels. Buxton Books is proud to host Meryanne Loum-Martin in-store for a signing of Inside Marrakesh: Enchanting Homes and Gardens. A portion of the proceeds from book sales during this signing will be donated to the Ibu Foundation. On Wednesday, March 8, Meryanne Loum-Martin - author of Inside Marrakesh: Enchanting Homes and Gardens - will be coming to Charleston straight from Morocco for an International Women’s Day celebration with the Ibu Foundation. While she’s in town, she’s going to stop by the bookstore for a signing of her book. Stop between 12:00 - 1:30 pm, to grab a signed, personalized copy of Inside Marrakesh. This is a free, in-store event with no RSVPs required. We are happy to announce that a portion of the proceeds made from Meryanne’s book during this signing will be donated to the Ibu Foundation. About Inside Marrakesh: Enchanting Homes and Gardens: Contemporary design meets Marrakesh's splendid artistic heritage in a fresh burst of color, form, and texture through a panoply of sensual houses and gardens. Noted designer Meryanne Loum-Martin provides entrée into the extraordinary residences of this fabled city's leading tastemakers. This exquisite book showcases the stunning properties of the world's leading design connoisseurs, including Jasper Conran, Lynn Guinness, Vanessa Branson, and Helen and Brice Marden, who have transformed Marrakesh's exotic style into unexpected but elegant expressions. The story of design in Marrakesh begins with the contributions of Bill Willis, Yves Saint Laurent, and Pierre Bergé, who fearlessly fused Moroccan elements--zellige tilework, rugs, pottery, fountains, woodwork, metalwork, and tadelakt wall treatments--with a luxuriant mix of furnishings from around the world. We are invited into such lush private places as the gardens of the Villa Oasis, designed by Madison Cox, and the Bulgaris' tranquil riad. Full of personal insights, Loum-Martin explores how international design-savvy individuals continue to incorporate such exuberant designs in their work. Today's Marrakesh style appeals to a wide variety of tastes--from formal to quirky, from rustic to refined--and is suitable for diverse settings. Eco-friendly materials, including earthenware and natural fibers, contribute to these appealing interiors and gardens. Superbly photographed, Inside Marrakesh abounds with a wealth of unique design ideas. About Meryanne Loum-Martin: International tastemaker Meryanne Loum-Martin is the proprietor of the award-winning Jnane Tamsna boutique hotel in Marrakesh's Palmeraie district. Lauded in publications such as Town & Country and Architectural Digest, she has designed porcelain dinnerware for Meissen and an outdoor furniture collection. Award-winning lifestyle and food photographer Jean Cazals' work has been published in numerous magazines and cookbooks. About The Ibu Movement: The word Ibu means “a woman of respect” in the Malay language of Indonesia. The Ibu Movement, a 501c3 non-profit organization, partners with women around the world, disrupting poverty and fashioning change through the art of their hands. Providing a marketplace for women’s artisanal goods is our most effective tool for elevating women out of poverty and into a position of sovereignty over their lives. Ibu collaborates with groups to design and market unique products, celebrating heritage and sustainable techniques of each culture and cooperative. By expanding markets for global women artisans and providing grants to build their capacity for success, the Ibu Movement provides a means for women to change their lives, and the world.
