The City of Recreation Department – along with instructor Holly Vories – will offer a creative writing series, “Writing from Memory,” Tuesdays, from August 22nd to October 10th, 2023. Each event runs from 10 am to 11:30 am. During the eight-session series, participants will develop their writing skills and use their own personal experiences to develop stories on a page. Plot, style, character development, tone, dialogue, and editing skills are only a few elements covered in the series. The series cost for residents is $40 and $45 for non-residents/visitors. Walk-ins are welcome and the series is prorated based on entry date. The City of Recreation Department will host a Rise & Shine Beach Yoga Flow class on the beach (25th Avenue) every Tuesday in May. Each event in the series is free to attend, begins at 7:30 am, and is open to both residents and visitors. Yoga teacher Kathy Berry will guide participants through a sequence that will focus on overall mind and body wellness. Rise & Shine Beach Yoga Flow is for all levels of fitness. Throughout the class, Kathy will share modifications/adaptive moves and  poses.   “Yoga Flow is a fantastic way to start the day,” said Karrie Ferrell, Recreation Director. “It helps correct muscle imbalances; increases flexibility, strength, and endurance; reduces stress; improves concentration and creativity; lowers body fat; stimulates the immune system; and more. Mind and Body Wellness, salt air, rolling waves, and sunshine.”   In the event of inclement weather, the Rise & Shine Yoga Flow classes will be held at the Recreation Center, Magnolia Room at 24 28th Avenue.

🤩THROWBACK: Before Charleston's most notorious hurricane blew through and shredded the place to bits, The Windjammer on Isle of Palms was a one-story brick block sports bar that served up cold Budweisers and cheeseburgers to island locals. Now, the beachfront venue is celebrating its 50th anniversary.

👀GATOR WATCH: A little alligator found itself on a busy roadway on Isle of Palms on Friday. The Isle of Palms Police Department posted a picture showing the young gator being removed from the street. Authorities said it had ended up hiding under a truck.

👀KNOW THIS: Many Dominion Energy customers on the Isle of Palms (IOP) were without power Friday evening as strong storms moved through the area. The impacted area spanned from 41st Avenue to encompass all of Wild Dunes and a portion of Dewees Island.

ANNOUNCED: CARTA leaders say they are testing out new routes between Mount Pleasant and the Isle of Palms to see if these routes would be possible. Isle of Palms city leaders says the transit can make for a happy and quick trip to the beach. From the Mount Pleasant pick-up point to the beach drop-off point takes around 20 minutes.

🧐KNOW THIS: Outdoor dining has been a huge help for restaurants in Isle of Palms and they may extend the ordinance to keep it in place. One business owner claims they’ve been “busier than ever” and credits that to outdoor dining. The new ordinance would extend the outdoor dining in place for another 12-18 months.

The City of Recreation Department will kick off the summer with the first of five Farmer’s Markets on June 15th from 4 pm to 7 pm. The event will be held on the Recreation Center’s front lawn, under the oaks. Residents, neighbors, and visitors can all enjoy live music as they browse through over 60 booths and displays, family-friendly activities, and more. Attendees can expect: Locally grown produce Local artists, crafters, photographers, and other vendors Food trucks and Specialty Foods Live Music with The Blue Plantation Band Family-friendly activities – face painting, balloon art, fairy hair, and games galore Scavenger hunt with FREE gifts (while supplies last) Selfie Station Fun Fire Department Display and Truck Police Department Display and Police Vehicles Recreation Department Display and Demos Local vendor features and highlights The Playground and Pickleball, Tennis, Outdoor Basketball Courts, and Soccer Field will be open for play throughout the evenings’ festivities “Our line-up of vendors each month amazing” said Karrie Ferrell, Recreation Director. “In June, to name a few, we have Wabi  Sabi Food Truck, Tweak of Nature, Bella Mack Jewelry, Claudia Art, Brew-ti-ful You, Play Salty, and more! This is a family-friendly event with no admissions cost.” The Recreation Department’s IOP KIDS (3–4- year-old) will also join in the fun. The Isle of Palms City Council held its regular meeting on Tuesday, October 25, 2022, at Council Chambers in City Hall. Listed below are the highlights from the meeting:. City Council continued discussions related to the revisions to the noise ordinance to address livability concerns and improve enforcement efforts. City Council referred this matter to the Public Safety Committee for additional research and discussion of proposed amendments to the noise ordinance.
