đź‘€KNOW THIS: The Town of Summerville has set a new date for its cancelled Fourth of July fireworks display for later this year. Freedom Fest was scheduled for July 4, but the event was cancelled because of severe weather. Town leaders say the fireworks display will be part of its 175th anniversary celebration in December.

🌸FLOWERTOWN FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND: The Flowertown Festival, presented by Summerville YMCA, returns this weekend for its 49th year. Founded in 1973, the Flowertown Festival is one of the largest arts and crafts festivals to grace the Southeast. Each spring, thousands flock to the town to see an array of colorful flowers in full bloom, as well as experience the offerings of hundreds of vendors.

Registration is open for the 4th annual Ugly Sweater 5K dash and one-mile stroll in historic downtown Summerville on December 11th. The 5K will begin at 8:45 am, while the one-mile stroll kicks off at 9:45 am at 206 Central Ave. Runners and walkers are invited to wear their most festive holiday sweater. Mews + Brews, Summerville’s first cat cafe, is planning to open in late 2022. Owner and founder Cait Cox says her fledgling business will partner with Dorchester Paws, who will provide the cats and kittens for the cafe’s “cat lounge.” Visitors will be able to adopt any of the rescue cats they see at the cafe.

NEW FOSSIL DISCOVERY: A team of scientists announced the discovery of a new fossil shark species from South Carolina. The new species lived nearly 30 million years ago, during the Oligocene Epoch of the Paleogene Period, and is based on approximately a dozen microscopic teeth that were discovered in Summerville.

🤩 DISCOUNTED ADOPTIONS: Dorchester Paws is joining a nation-wide event "Empty the Shelters" by providing reduced adoption fees this week. The event is sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation and runs from May 2 to 8. During that time, adoption fees will be $25. The reduced fee does not apply to kittens and puppies and will run through Sunday.
