Opening Reception: “Only Once in the Light,” joint exhibition from Leigh Sabisch and Allison Koch: Redux Contemporary Art Center will present “Only Once in the Light,” a joint exhibition from Charleston based artists Leigh Sabisch and Allison Koch, exhibiting as Sardine Press. Redux says this new exhibition “showcases the ongoing creative endeavors of the artists in their personal practices and as a pair, who merge their energetic & multidisciplinary approach by combining oil painting and printmaking techniques that evolve into truly collaborative work.” The artists state: “As a team, we have found a way to incorporate the practices and themes of our individual work into a larger scope of collaborative making. As printmakers, we want to push our understanding of such a traditional medium as well as investigate how we can adapt to challenges we face through creating experimental pieces.” “Only Once in the Light” is the result of the pair looking back on previous bodies of work and noting how they individually incorporate the effects of light. Their varying perceptions of light opened both artists up to the pleasure and complexities of communicating abstract ideas and translating them into a cohesive, physical, shared experience. Sabisch paints masses of twisted limbs which are layered with tonality and depth, highlighting the way light reflects on the figures. Koch plays with iridescence to refract light using gloss finishes. The exhibition results in a cohesive body of work that celebrates Sardine Press’s continued experimentation in collaboration. In addition to the six-week exhibition, the pair will host related programming & a printing making workshop for the public. Redux Contemporary Art Center is located at 1056 King Street. You can learn more at reduxstudios.org/learn.

Kristine Hanson: Evidence of Things Unseen curated by Shelby Corso Exhibit dates: February 3 – March 18, 2023 Opening reception: Friday February 3, 5:00 - 8:00PM Evidence of Things Unseen, merges both black and white silver gelatin images with two- and three- dimensional mediums to expand the dialogue of the work. The convergence of dispirit elements; fiber arts, sculpture and black and white photography seen here is the origin of who Hanson is as an artist.  To express her unique point of view, she has incorporated found objects and ephemera, as well as black and white photography into three-dimensional objects. The collected items are deconstructed to show the remnants of what remains, giving the viewer a range of tactile and two- dimensional objects to explore their own journey of memory and the human spirit.

(Opening Reception) - UNFOLDING is an art installation by artist, Jenifer Padilla. This show is a site-specific piece in the 1056 Gallery at Redux. Padilla highlights specific pieces from previous live performances with Unbound Ballet Project and creates new ones for the gallery show. With this recent work, she focused on the act of painting becoming a dance itself —the paint and canvas taking on their own performance. The mark left captures a moment in time when dance is typically a fleeting act. There is the gravity of the paint and the dancers’ movement, but what’s left from both actions of paint and dancers meeting is serendipitous; left to chance. We get to physically see the chance when both mediums meet together. There will be a short live performance to kick off the show on the opening night, Friday, March 31, 2023 at 6pm. Show will be up in the gallery from March 31 – May 20, 2023
