Skopje, Macedonia wins the award for the strangest and most comical city I've been to in the world. There are some interesting vibes floating around this place. Firstly, there are literally STATUES EVERYWHERE. All kinds of statues -- like famous people, artists, historians, architects, horses, lions, birds, dogs and more. The statue in this photo is of Alexander The Great, riding his big horse. I saw over a thousand different statues in the short time I was in Skopje. And it's creepy. I feel like they all come alive at night and play around (like Night at the Museum style)? . You may ask, why are there so many statues? Well apparently, the government spent loads of money (up to €500 million) in a project called "Skopje 2014" -- to build statues and renovate the city to give it more of a classical appeal and to attract more tourists... All I can say is that (for maybe the wrong reasons), the plan worked. These statues have definitely become a tourist attraction within themselves. Another thing about Skopje -- they copy notable landmarks from other cities and use an identical replica for themselves. For example, they have a "bull statue" exactly like the one on Wall Street in NYC. They have an arch gateway, exactly like the Arc de Triomphe in France. And they're building a big Ferris wheel, exactly like the London eye. That being said, the city isn't all that bad. I went out to some bars last night and it was great. There are plenty of cafés to hang out at, and the river is a nice spot to chill out.
