⛵️KNOW THIS: 3 CofC alumni will be competing in the 2020 summer Olympics in Tokyo. Juan Maegli ‘16, Enrique Arathoon ‘17, and Stefano Peschiera ‘18 will be competing in the Men’s Laser class sailing event on Sunday July 25th and the medal race will be Sunday, August 1st.

🌿GOING GREEN: CofC has partnered with Siemens Industry for a new energy conservation program starting this month. It is expected to reduce annual utility costs by $1.8 million and annual greenhouse gas emissions by 11,260 metric tons. They hope to complete the project within 2 years.

Celebrate: CofC will hold spring 2021 Commencement ceremonies for the Class of 2021 on May 6, 7, and 8. The ceremonies will all be held outdoors in the Patriots Point Soccer Stadium + the Cistern Yard w/covid policies in place.

📚NEW PROGRAMS: CofC announced four new academic programs for the fall 2021 semester. Two new majors include environmental geosciences and electrical engineering. There is a new minor in management as well as a nursing partnership with MUSC where students can get a BA in biology at CofC and a BS in nursing from MUSC in 4.5 years.

📚BACK TO SCHOOL: CofC President Andrew T. Hsu announced that all students registered or planning to register for classes for the fall 2021 semester must comply with a one-time COVID testing requirement before they return to campus. It must be conducted between August 12-19. Students may be exempt from the test if they are vaccinated or submit documentation of a postive COVID test result dated after May 22, 2021.

CofC NOTICE: The College of Charleston is requiring all students to fill out a survey letting the university know if they have been vaccinated (COVID-19) or not. Based on this information, university officials say it could change rules on campus or subject students to monthly COVID-19 tests.

MASK UPDATE: CofC officials say they will not require masks or social distancing inside for people who are fully vaccinated in gatherings of up to 30 people. People who are unvaccinated are still required to wear masks inside unless they are inside an office alone. Masks are also not required outside on campus for anyone who is fully vaccinated or for anyone unvaccinated if they are socially distanced and traveling alone. Masks and social distancing will be required for classes and for indoor gatherings that have more than 30 people

☀️NEW SOLAR PAVILION: The new solar shade pavilion near Rivers Green will pay tribute to indigenous and enslaved people who resided near the site throughout history. The idea for this pavilion was inspired by the discovery of a slave tag and other historical artifacts during an archeological excavation. They will unveil it on October 15th at 10am. The pavilion has solar powered fans, electrical outlets, charging stations, and offsets 15% of the energy needs for CofC’s Spanish- language house Casa Hispana

ATTN CofC: Tomorrow, the College will administer 300 COVID vaccinations to CofC students at Student Health Services. Student appointments are booked on a first-come-first-served basis and can be scheduled through the student health portal.

Attn COfC: College of Charleston Just announced that it will begin offering appointments for the COVID-19 vaccine for currently enrolled (registered for Spring 2021 semester) students beginning next week. The College anticipates receiving both the Moderna and Johnson & Johnson vaccines from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC).

Former U.S. Representative Joe Cunningham is bringing his campaign for governor to the College of Charleston for the first stop on his fall campus tour. Cunningham will deliver remarks and meet students at the Stern Center Garden on Wednesday, September 8th at 6 pm. Masks are required for this event.

💉VACCINE GOALS: CofC aims to have 90% of their students vaccinated ahead of the fall semester. The vaccine remains voluntary, but students are able to upload their vaccine information to a database to help campus health and safety. They will be holding vaccine clinics on campus today, August 19th, August 24th, August 25th, and September 1st.
