We booked a bus through our accommodation to the biggest city of Myanmar. We paid 5000 MMK per person. For the route we needed about 7 hours. In between, however, the bus stopped short or a little longer to load or unload parcels or people. In Yangon, we were kicked out at a bus station, which is very far out of town. With the only tourist, who also sat in the bus, we shared a taxi in the city. You should not pay more than 10'000 MMK. The journey can take up to 2 hours, depending on the traffic and location of the accommodation. It took us about an hour, which in contrast to the long bus rides in the last few days was a no brainer. We were warmly welcomed to the Check in @ Downtown hotel in Chinatown. The booked double room without window was small but fine and after a week (average temperature in the night 28C) we were very happy about a air conditioning. We spent 4 nights in Yangon.

Modern day Burma (Myanmar) is what Thailand looked like 50 years ago. My last trip to Asia needed to include it for me to begin to understand the complexities in this country. So many ethnic tensions and corruption issues. But the people I met were sweet and kind. Interesting history and probably an unfortunate future. We’ll see.

Many tourists head to Myanmar to catch a glimpse of the balloon magic in Bagan. however Yangon is definitely a city worth adding to the itinerary. Scenic train routes, amazing temples, and some of the world's BEST street food!

A great place to hangout and get to know the culture and interact with local people. We loved taking a ride on the circular train.
