You ain’t officially visit Japan if you don’t stand under thousand shrines, Fushimi Inari Taisha. Make sure to check Japan calendar before you drop there, don’t wanna be disappointed with super crowded place and plenty tourist right? Any seasons are fine and weekend is highly recommend!

This red-arched pathway deserves all of its fame. Go here in the early evening and take your time hiking high into the hills, past the crowd to experience dusk surrounded by ancient shrines and tall pine trees.

This is *the* spot people think of when they think of Kyoto - and for good reason! The iconic red gates actually run all the way up the mountain and are part of a shrine. Make sure to time your hike so that you can catch the sunset at the top. There’s a perfect view over the city with the sun setting behind mountains.

Fushimi Inari is the shrine of the God of Rice, also worshipped as the patron of business. Business men donate tori gates to bring good luck to their business. The bigger your donation, the bigger your gate! You probably recognize Fushimi Inari, there are countless pictures of it floating around on the internet. So thats why you must get there before 8 am. What you may not realize from the pictures is that the Fushimi Inari gates continue all the way up the hill. I highly recommend you follow these gates and ‘hike’ up (it’s really a very easy hike). Crowds get much thinner as you go up, and you can also enjoy some fabulous views over Kyoto! There’s not much to see beyond the view point, but if you have time definitely complete the hike! There is a cool little shrine at the top too!

If you see anything when you come to Kyoto, see the torii gates and shrines at Fushimi Inari Yaisha. I booked a tour through airbnb which went through a scenic trail of bamboo forests, which was beautiful and honestly there was no way i would have found those paths alone. It was around 8 miles in total, but you can do much less of it through the main entrance - just a bit more crowded with tourists.
