👀KNOW THIS: This June, the Folly Beach council will vote on increasing the city parking lots’ hourly rate. The current rate is $2 per hour or $10 per day. June’s vote could increase both of those figures by 50 cents. The council approved the concept of a parking rate increase earlier this week and it will be voted on in June. If it's approved, it will be the first time since 2019 that the parking rates have changed. The rates only apply to city lots with signage and pay stations.

👀KNOW THIS: Folly Beach City Council on Tuesday will discuss making changes to an ordinance that restricts parking on Center Street. Some residents are speaking out against these restrictions and plan on attending the meeting to speak in front of the Council. The current ordinance makes Center Street a 2-hour parking zone, but Folly beach residents can park there for as long as they like. The exemption has outraged some non-residents, who feel everybody in the state should have equal opportunity and access to the beach.

👀KNOW THIS: Fishermen and beach lovers will have to wait at least one more year before they can soak up the views and make record catches from the new Folly Beach Pier. The replacement project that started in Oct. 2020 is expected to wrap up next spring. Right now the work is on schedule, and county park officials are crossing their fingers in hopes that no unforeseen circumstances arise.

If you pick Folly Beach for your day trip, know this: in addition to having a great shoreline, Folly’s known locally as “The Edge of America,” so you owe it to yourself to walk out to the end of the island and get a close-up (well, relatively close-up) view of the Morris Island Lighthouse with a self-guided tour. Drive to the end of East Ashley Avenue, park on the side of the road (make sure all four tires are in the dirt!), and enjoy the local graffiti on the street as you hike out to where the sidewalk ends (which is also known as Rat Island, but don’t let that deter you).

🏄‍♀️WAHINE CLASSIC: July 31, 7AM-August 1st, 5PM. The first all women's surf contest in South Carolina, the "Folly Beach Wahine Surf Classic" was founded in 2001 by Katie Coryell and Kelly Kane Wood. They recognized the growing population of female surfers in the area, brought them together for a weekend of fun and waves, and a tradition was born. The contest ranges from kids in the "Push and Surf" all the way up to professional surfers.
