So the craziest thing just happened to me in #Tirana, #Albania today. I was on my way to meet an @instagram follower named Vlorina @capo_vlorina in the city, and along the way, some girl who I didn't know recognized me on the street and said hello like she knew me well. I was really confused.. . Then 3 hours later, when I was with Vlorina, we bumped into the same girl who recognized me before Bree @bree_fernweh_soul and the two girls turned out to be good childhood friends.. . How insane is that? Here is a photo of us. I can't believe this just happened. On my way to #Ohrid #Macedonia tonight!

Tirana is the capital of Albania and a very lively City at that! this city has come a long way from its communistic days only 30 years ago. The city is quite loud with music playing, a lot of people walking the streets and art sculptures everywhere. I never felt unsafe here as it is quite a friendly City. If you come to Albania more than likely you'll be in Tirana!

Tirana is an undiscovered gem in Southeastern Europe. Hidden away from the world for fifty years, it is emerging as a cool, hip, colorful destination. Definitely eat the local food: Mixed meats, delicious creamy, cheesy dishes mixed with peppers, with warm pita-like bread. The food is a huge highlight and delicious. Also, check out the Old Pyramid and the Bunk Art Exhibit that shows the time under their communist dictator.

The last Stalinist holdout in Europe, Albania is slowly recovering from years of neglect and now corruption and mafia control. The educated elite are leaving for Western Europe for higher wages and quality of life. Albania is still worth a visit, though. At first blush, you see emerging modernity. A shallow scratch beneath the surface brings you back to the systemic troubles.
