About 25 kilometers north of Budapest is the town of Szentendre. It traditionally has been a Serbian village in Hungary. It now seems to be a major tourist destination, and not necessarily for foreign tourists. Many Hungarians head there on the weekends to shop, eat Serbian cuisine, and get away from Budapest. The crowds were unexpected and disappointing. But, it was good to visit a different locale so near to Budapest. Get there early and not on the weekends to suck in the culture and cuisine.

For the artsy crowd, lets take a 15 minute bus ride up the Danube from Budapest to Szentendre. A small arts community will be your thrift shop heaven. Stalls line the streets with cheap, handcrafted goods from paintings to repurposed clothing.

This little town is a great day trip out of Budapest. There is a train that will take you directly into Szentendre from Budapest. It can get a bit crowded during tourist season, so start off early. This village is a nice place to wander, purchase pieces from local artists, pick up some chocolate/ marzipan and indulge on traditional dishes.
