Ulriken
At an elevation of 643 m, Ulriken is the highest of seven mountains surrounding Bergen and is one of the popular places for hiking in Bergen. There are several route options of different difficulty levels which makes it friendly for all ages. The hike up offers great views throughout and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Hiking Ulriken is straightforward with most of the challenge being its steepness (expect to put your stamina to test!), and this makes Ulriken a great place for hiking in Bergen. Hike overview: Distance = 1.8km/1.12miles, Elevation = 431m/1,414ft, Hike-o-meter = 8/10, Difficulty = 4/10, Views = 7/10 (city, mountains). We chose the longer way up (read: easier path) since it was our first hike on this trip. The route started off easy but steep, and just a short half hour later we found ourselves catching our breath from the inclination. We walked past residential houses, a school, and a few goats before coming to a gravel path which later connects to a long flight of stone steps that eventually brought us all the way to the top. Not halfway up the mountain, we were already presented with spectacular views of the city. We stopped several times to soak in the view and sneak in some photo-taking while enjoying a quick rest

Johan Blytts vei
If you are driving, park at Johan Blytts vei, which is to the right of Bergen Hostel Montana and right where the track starts. It is recommended to park here since parking is complimentary. However, it fills up quickly so be early! If you are driving from the city center, take 585 towards “Haukeland Sykehus” and turn left just before the tunnel. You then want to drive up Haukelandsbakken (Haukelandsbakken 40, 5009 Bergen). Parking is also available here but there is an hourly fee.

Sky:skraperen
Once you reach the top, you will see Restaurant Sky:Skraperen next to the cable car station. From here, you can hike further out to the summit (another 20-30min hike) or choose to make this your endpoint and enjoy the panoramic view of the city from the restaurant with a rewarding meal. Thrill-seekers will also be happy to know that zip-lining is available at the top of Mount Ulriken. However, take note that the zip-line operating times differ across seasons. We sadly did not get to try the zip-line adventure as they were not operating on the day of our hike.

Fløyen
There is also the option of hiking from Mount Ulriken to Mount Fløyen on the Vidden trail, recommended as an alternative to hiking Mount Ulriken if you want to enjoy the scenic view without too much uphill work. The Vidden hike itself will take 5-6 hours so it is recommended you take the cable car up Mount Ulriken and make Mount Fløyen your endpoint. Or, you can do the reverse and take the funicular up Mount Fløyen and hike to Mount Ulriken.

Useful tips: The trail we’ve mentioned (green trail) is the easiest and is well-marked. There is a separate blue trail that might provides a bit more of a challenge. Always check the weather forecast so you know what to expect. Layering is key. Norway is known for its unseasonable weather after all so while we all want to hope for the best, it is definitely encouraged to be prepared for the worst too. There are no toilets along the way but you’ll be able to find one easily once you get to the top. Try to pack light to make the climb as easy as possible. Bring some snacks if necessary and of course water!
