Sushi Yasuda
Fantastic sushi. An upscale experience where you'll find more authentic sushi options (rather than some of the more American style classics like a tuna avocado roll). My favorite part is the decor - every square inch of the place including the ceiling is made of beautiful bamboo. Get a seat at the sushi bar and just watch the legendary sushi chefs do amazing work.

Atlantic Grill
Actually not a sushi restaurant per se, as it is a seafood restaurant with many different menu items, but the sushi is incredible. Located across the street from iconic Lincoln Center, this is the perfect spot for before or after going to the opera.

SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa
Always a long wait and no reservations but arguably the best sushi in NYC (or the entire east coast). Originally a favorite in LA they finally opened one here and it's incredible. Worth the long wait but best bet is to stand outside the door before they open for the day and grab a table when they first open.

Lots of great sushi in NYC but the Tuna on Crispy Rice here will knock your socks off. I'll order two of them (or even three if I'm starving) and will order nothing else. It's that good. Busy and trendy Chelsea location. There's a slightly quieter location upper west side.

Don't let the location fool you. It's in the basement of a midtown office building but it is a VERY authentic place so don't go here if you want "American" sushi like California rolls and stuff like that. They'll serve sashimi and it's amazing. They also have literally hundreds of diff types of sake but it's not a sake bomb kind of place. Worth the adventure of you want an authentic experimence with great sushi and cool bamboo decor. Oddly it's a block from Sushi Yasuda which is also on this list but is a slightly higher scale experience. Enjoy!

Agreed! Sticky rice tuna "sushi sandwich" is amazing.
