Lake Angelus
This is a stunning overnight hike, or day hike if you're extra speedy. Nestled away in Nelson Lakes National Park you'll find an impressive 28 bunk hut with water and fire mess hall which all overlooks Lake Angelus and the mountains. Between October and March you have to book and prices are more expensive so try the shoulder months and pack some treats, camera and lots of gear to put your feet up after this long walk across mountain tops or through lush forests.

Roys Peak
This hike is extremly touristy but for good reason. Start the hike from the Roys Peak carpark early in the morning and hike it for sunrise. This way you'll beat the crowds and be in for a real treat at the top. It's a hard 3 hours of straight uphill to the top but You'll see panoramic views of the Alps and Lake Wanaka which won't disapoint and is worth the climb

Tongariro Alpine Crossing
I haven't done the full walk but I know it's a stunner. We did it for sunrise and it was oh so stunning ad we beat the crowds. It's a long walk so be prepared and have plenty of food water and gear so you can enjoy it! This is one of New Zealands Great Walks so it's very popular. The shoulder seasons are best so skip summer if you're not a fan of people but watch ouit in winter as it's completly snow bound. DOC has more info

Mueller Hut Route
This is a hard uphill climb for about 3 hours. The view from the top is absolutely incredible and worth enduring the climb for. You can stay in the hut or do the hike as a day walk. The hut is amazing, one of the best in NZ. You can also camp up here which is another popular option especially in summer so get in quick to book as rates and popularity go up over summer.

Start Alex Knob Trail
Often done as a day walk, this one is a great walk to do if you want a diferent and espeically incredible view of Franz Josef Glacier. The track winds through the trees and up above into alpine terrain, not super family friendly as it's a bit harder as it's mostly uphill however if your kids are eager it's worth a shot!

Mount Brown Hut
Mount Brown is a little harder and slightly less popular track on the west coast of New Zealand. This track is accessed past Lake Kaniere from Hokitiki. There's a gorgoues little yellow hut at the top which is worth staying in but is first come first served so be well prepared in case it's full, bring a tent or have enough time to turn around before dark. Panoramic views from the west coast and over the Alps are incredibly rewarding.

Mount Fishtail
Not many people stop in Marlborough but if you're up for another hard and rewarding climb this is worth stopping for. The track winds through forest, over a river then straight up through the trees to a big scree slope. There's a small hut at the top however it doesn't have a fire an dis only 4 bunks. The track to summit isn't clearly marked so be careful choosing your route to the summit. After the scree slope it's a lot clearer. Views reach from Nelson and right around to Wellington and Mount Tapi.
