I spent almost a year living in the heart of Switzerland at University of Bern spending every weekend hopping on a train and exploring everything this country has to offer. I’ve compiled a list of MUST SEE mountain towns and cities in Switzerland that will surely make the trip of a lifetime.

Lausanne
Lausanne is in the French speaking part of Switzerland and on the east side of Lake Geneva. It is home to the famous Olympic Museum & beautiful Lausanne Cathedral (photo above). This city is the perfect size and has a lot of places to see and things to do. It is a very hilly city, so bring your walking shoes, because you’ll want to go everything.

Interlaken
Interlaken is a Ritzy, small town in between two lakes (hence the name Interlaken) with the Aare river flowing through it. This is where you will transfer trains to get to Lauterbrunnen and eventually Grindelwald, Gimmelwald, & Murren. There is a lot of local Swiss cuisine here, souvenir shops, outdoor gear outfitters, & chocolate shops. Enjoy a walk around the river and the views of mountains all around you.

Gimmelwald
Another stunning mountain town you must see in Switzerland. Spend the morning skiing, head into a bar for an après ski drink, then sit down for dinner with some cheese & chocolate fondue by the fire. It really doesn’t get much better than this.

Grindelwald
This might be my favorite place I’ve ever been in the world. No words can describe how amazing this little mountain town of Grindelwald is. Experience world class skiing, sledding, hiking, and the best view of the Swiss mountains. Don’t forget sunscreen, because the reflection of snow mixed with the high UV exposure is insanely strong.

Chillon Castle
Chateau de Chillon is the famous castle on the east side of lake Geneva between Montreux & Villeneuve. I would recommend planning a whole day in this canton of Switzerland and explore the city of Montreux, then walk along the river to chateau de Chillon where you’ll be blown away by the beautiful castle surrounded by mountains and lakes.

Lucerne
Lucerne is famous for its 14th century “Chapel Bridge” that is built over River Reuss in the middle of the city. It is an old city which means it is rich in culture, history, and festivals. Visit Lucerne during the Fasnacht Carnival at the end of winter, the streets are wild with mulled wine, food vendors, people in costumes, and parades.

Lugano is in the warmer part of Switzerland and also the Italian speaking part. It is known mostly for the beautiful Lake Lugano is sits on and it’s proximity to Italy. Take the cable car up Mount San Salvatore (photo above) for incredible views of the lake, city, and parts of Italy. The town is very charming and a bit cheaper than most parts of Switzerland. You will find a lot of Swiss locals coming here to spend a vacation or long weekend. There is many options as well for shopping and dining in Lugano.

St. Gallen
St. Gallen is famous for its variety of architecture styles, libraries, and cathedrals. Experience the town on the weekends during the local farmers market where the crowds will spend the whole day dancing, drinking, and laughing. It is not very touristy, so you are sure to get a real Swiss experience if you come to St.Gallen. It is accessible with many good transport links to the rest of the country as well as Germany and Austria.

Zürich
Zurich is a great base to plan your Switzerland vacation around. It is a big city and has everything you need here. It is one of the most expensive cities in Switzerland (and the world), so plan accordingly if you plan to stay here for an extended period. The churches, parks, shops, restaurants, clubs, and markets make this a very fun and exciting city.

The iconic teal blue lake surrounded by mountains, hiking, skiing, waterfalls, and everything else that’s magical about Switzerland. A lovely way to spend the day with short walks around the lake and a couple restaurants for coffee or a meal. Very well maintained facilities & grounds. And the lake is just stunning.

First (Grindelwald)
“First”, is a mountain summit that is accessible by cable car from the mountain town of Grindelwald. You are literally inside the Alps surrounded by mountains in every direction. Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau (photo above) face this summit and will take your breath away. I came up here in the Spring and spent the afternoon having a coffee in the spacious restaurant at the top and taking in the views. There is a lot of hiking and it is one of the main lifts that people ski from in this region. If you do anything from this Itinerary, come to First!

Bern
The capital of Switzerland and the main hub for easy transport to everywhere in the country. There is so much rich culture and history here not mention it is beyond beautiful everywhere you go. The Aare river runs right through it and in the Summer you can float down if it’s warm enough. It is quite easy to get lost walking down the Main Street exploring local Swiss cafes, restaurants, shops, & museums. It is a big city and there is so much to do here, carve out a couple days just for Bern.

Meiringen
A stunning valley surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, rivers, & heaps of walks and hikes. Aare Gorge (photo above) is a section of the Aare river that carves through the limestone rock that allows a narrow walking path over the teal blue river and pops you out to towering mountains on both entrances. This is an area of Switzerland that is well worth visiting & exploring.
